Ebola Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is issuing this Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory about a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). EVD is a severe illness and is often fatal. Currently, no suspected, probable, or confirmed EVD cases related to this outbreak have been reported in the United States or outside of the DRC. 

Hurricane Gabrielle

Where is Hurricane Gabrielle Headed?

 

Hurricane Gabrielle has picked up strength as it continues to move northeastward into open water, according to the National Hurricane Center. Forecasters said in an early morning advisory on Sept. 23 that Gabrielle was located about 305 miles east-northeast of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds near 140 mph with higher gusts, making it a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Repeated Head Impacts Cause Early Neuron Loss and Inflammation in Young Athletes

 

Research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that repeated head impacts from contact sports can cause early and lasting changes in the brains of young to middle-aged athletes. The findings show that these changes may occur years before chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) develops its hallmark disease features, which can now only be detected by examining brain tissue after death.

Haifa Smoked Fish Recalls Cold Smoked Salmon and Cold Smoked Seabass Due to Possible Health Risk

 

Haifa Smoked Fish is recalling Cold Smoked Salmon 8 OZ., LOT # 219 and Cold Smoked Seabass 8 OZ., LOT # 212, because they may be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes. Listeria Monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Aquastar (USA) Corp Recalls Kroger Frozen Raw EZ Peel, Kroger Mercado Frozen Cooked Shrimp, and Aquastar Raw Shrimp Skewers

 

AquaStar (USA) Corp of Seattle, WA is recalling approximately 49,920 bags (net wt. 2 lbs.) of Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp, approximately 18,000 bags (net wt. 2 lbs.) of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp, and approximately 17,264 bags (net wt. 1.25 lbs.) of AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers because they may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions and may have become contaminated with cesium-137 (Cs-137).

Olympus Issues Voluntary Recall for Specific Lots of ViziShot 2 FLEX (19G) EBUS -TBNA Needles

 

Olympus Corporation has announced a voluntary, global medical device removal action for ViziShot 2 FLEX (19G) EBUS -TBNA needles manufactured prior to May 12, after receiving reports of device components detaching during procedures. The ViziShot 2 FLEX is protected by a hypotube and sheath. The hypotube protects the sheath from the needle tip and provides stability during transit and insertion.
