Health Alert: Measles (Rubeola)

 

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed a case of measles in a Fulton County resident on Sept. 11. The case is out of the infectious period but may have exposed others between Sept. 2 and 11. The case was unvaccinated against measles and acquired the virus while traveling within the United States. Most cases reported in 2025 have been in persons who had not received measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Tax-Exempt Hospitals Provided Nearly $150 Billion in Total Benefits to Communities

 

An AHA analysis released Sept. 10 highlights how tax-exempt hospitals provided nearly $150 billion in total benefits to their communities in 2022, the most recent year comprehensive data is available from the Internal Revenue Service. The total marks a nearly 50% increase in community benefit spending from 2017 to 2022.

 

Treating Opioid Addiction in Jails Improves Treatment Engagement, Reduces Overdose Deaths and Reincarceration

 

A study supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) finds that individuals who received medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) while incarcerated were significantly more likely to continue treatment six months after release than those who did not receive MOUD. The study also found that receiving MOUD in jail was associated with a 52% lower risk of fatal opioid overdose, a 24% lower risk of non-fatal opioid overdose, a 56% lower risk of death from any cause, and a 12% lower risk of reincarceration after release. 

NIH Launches Consortium to Reduce Risk of Stillbirth in the U.S.

 

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched efforts aimed at reducing the rate of preventable stillbirths in the United States. Investigators will develop tools, devices and other technologies that have the potential to affect diagnosis and prevention efforts relevant to stillbirth, which occurs in 1 in 160 deliveries in the U.S. About 23,600 stillbirths at 20 weeks or greater gestation are reported annually.

BD Provides Update on Voluntary Recall of Certain BD Alaris™ Pump Infusion Sets

 

Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) has expanded their Class I voluntary recall initiated in the United States on July 8 and expanded on July 17 to inform customers of worst-case performance, under certain use cases, for the BD Alaris™ Pump Module model 8100 when used with a subset of compatible pump infusion sets, as compared to the performance described in the user manual. 

Gooder Foods Issues Allergy Alert On - Undeclared Milk and Cashews in Goodles Vegan is Believin’ – Plant Based Pasta

 

Gooder Foods, Inc. is recalling five lots of Vegan Is Believin’ – Plant Based White Cheddar with Spirals produced as they may contain milk, which is not listed on the label, and three lots of Here Comes Truffle – Creamy Truffle Flavored Cheddar and Shells, as they may contain cashew which is not listed on the label. The recalled lots were produced between April 7 and April 15.

Sprout Organics Voluntarily Recalls One Lot of Sweet Potato Apple and Spinach Due to Possible Health Risk

 

Sprout Organics has initiated a voluntary recall of one lot of Sprout Organics® Sweet Potato Apple and Spinach because it may contain elevated levels of lead. Exposure to lead, even at low levels, may increase blood lead levels. Additional signs and symptoms of lead exposure are more likely with acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead. The effects of lead depend upon the amount and duration of exposure and age/body weight.
