NHC Tracking Two Areas in the Atlantic Behind Hurricane Erin

 

The National Hurricane Center is tracking two areas of interest in the eastern Atlantic for possible development. This is in addition to Hurricane Erin, which is anticipated to remain offshore of the Eastern U.S. coast. The tropical wave located over the central tropical Atlantic is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

DCH Accepting Public Input for the Rural Health Transformation Program

 

The Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) is currently accepting public input on ideas that will potentially shape the Rural Health Transformation Program grant process. Ideas are being accepted from now until Aug. 29. All submissions will be reviewed after that time, and DCH may reach out for further information.

NIH Scientists Lay Foundation for Potential Gene-Editing Therapy for Late-Onset Tay-Sachs

 

Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) successfully reduced the severity of late-onset Tay-Sachs (LOTS) disease in human cell cultures and a mouse model by using a novel gene-editing treatment. LOTS is a rare form of Tay-Sachs disease with signs and symptoms such as muscle weakness, loss of coordination, muscle spasms, and sometimes loss of mental function beginning in late childhood to adulthood. 

Two-Dose Rherapy for S. aureus Bloodstream Infections on Par with Standard Treatment

 

A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported clinical trial has found that the outcome of treating complicated Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections with two intravenous (IV) doses of the antibiotic dalbavancin seven days apart is just as good as daily IV doses of conventional antibiotics over four to six weeks. Nearly 120,000 S. aureus bloodstream infections and 20,000 associated deaths occurred in the United States in 2017. 

B. Braun Medical Issues Voluntary Nationwide Recall of Lactated Ringer’s Injection and 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection

 

B. Braun Medical Inc. is voluntarily recalling two lots of Lactated Ringer's Injection USP 1000 mL, and 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection USP 1000 mL to the hospital level due to the presence of particulate matter inside the container. B. Braun has identified through complaints the potential for the product to contain particulate matter in solution. To date, there have been no reports of serious injury, death or other adverse events associated with this issue. 

FDA Advises Public Not to Eat, Sell, or Serve Certain Imported Frozen Shrimp

 

The products affected include certain raw frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (doing business as BMS Foods), a company located in Indonesia, and sold at Walmart stores in AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MO, MS, OH, OK, PA, TX, and WV. At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered U.S. commerce. The FDA is working with distributors and retailers that received products from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati.
