There have been 17 new outbreaks reported in 2026, and 94% of confirmed cases (1,609 of 1,714) are outbreak-associated (377 from outbreaks starting in 2026 and 1,232 from outbreaks that started in 2025).

A drug-resistant strain of shigella infections is increasing in the United States (U.S.), according to federal health officials. In an April 9 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), officials found the infections, which have no Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved oral treatment, have jumped 8.5% from 2011 to 2023.
