National Hurricane Center Monitoring 2 Areas for Tropical Development

 

Tropical development is possible in two areas of the Atlantic Basin over the next several days, including the Gulf near Florida, following the recent pair of hurricanes, Humberto and Imelda. The National Hurricane Center is monitoring areas in the eastern Atlantic and also near the Sunshine State.

With respiratory illness season underway, COVID-19 cases have continued to fluctuate nationwide. Some regions of the United States are experiencing "very high" and "high" COVID-19 viral activity, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

FEMA Awards Nearly $3.5 Billion to Help States Manage Emergency Preparedness

 

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) returned nearly $3.5 billion of taxpayer dollars back into American communities, empowering state and local leaders to better prepare for emergencies like fires, floods, tornadoes, cyber incidents, and terrorist attacks. These funds, administered through FEMA’s non-disaster grant programs, empower communities to hire and train firefighters and other first responders, plan for potential cyber disruptions, and much more. 

Norovirus Outbreak on Royal Caribbean Cruise Sickens More Than 70

 

A norovirus outbreak has sickened over 70 people aboard a 13-day Royal Caribbean Cruise, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported. Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas departed from San Diego on Sept. 19 and is scheduled to arrive in Miami on Oct. 2. Out of 1,874 passengers, 71 have reported being ill during the voyage as well as one crew member. The predominant symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting.

NIH Establishes Nation's First Dedicated Organoid Development Center to Reduce Reliance on Animal Modeling

 

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced the award of contracts for launching the Standardized Organoid Modeling (SOM) Center, a national resource that will be dedicated to using cutting-edge technologies to develop standardized organoid-based new approach methodologies (NAMs) that deliver robust, reproducible, and patient-centered research findings. 

Georgia Nut Company, Third-Party Manufacturer for Tru Fru, LLC Issues Voluntary Recall of Specific Varieties of Tru Fru Freeze Dried

 

Tru Fru, LLC announced that its third-party manufacturer, Georgia Nut Company (GNC) issued a voluntary recall of specific varieties of Tru Fru Freeze Dried products due to the potential presence of metal in the product. Hard or sharp foreign objects in food may cause traumatic injury including laceration and perforation of tissues of the mouth, tongue, throat, stomach and intestine as well as damage to the teeth and gums.

Violent Actors and Cyber Criminals Threaten Emergency Services Sector

The Office of Intelligence and Analysis sent an assessment of threats to the Emergency Services Sector— police, firefighters, and other first responders— from violent extremists, other physical threat actors, or malicious cyber actors.
