Application for GME Funding

The Georgia Board of Healthcare Workforce (GBHCW) has created a form for hospitals interested in receiving graduate medical education (GME) funding under the GREAT Health (Georgia Rural Enhancement and Transformation of Health) Program, Georgia’s Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP). This funding is intended to support unfilled and currently approved ACGME residency positions that result in a measurable net increase in filled GME slots. Funding is available for up to 75 residency slots across the state. If awarded, this program provides $200,000 per year, per GME slot to support residency expansion.

Priority will be given to programs serving rural and underserved counties and training physicians in core specialties critical to Georgia’s healthcare workforce needs.

Please note these important dates:

  • Interested programs must notify GBHCW via the new form of their intent to increase their GME complement and/or fill current ACGME approved slots no later than Feb. 13.
  • GBHCW will advise selected sites by Feb. 27 if they have been approved for this funding. Programs must then request a quota increase for the match from National Residency Matching Program by March 2 due to funding from the RHTP.
  • Programs must notify GBHCW by April 1 confirming whether the additional residency slots were successfully completed.
  • Payments will begin Nov. 1 and will continue every six months thereafter for five additional payments.
