FDA Outlines Stricter Covid Vaccine Booster Approval Standards for Healthy People

On May 20, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) outlined new regulatory guidance for future Covid-19 vaccine boosters, setting stricter approval standards for healthy Americans. The agency said it wants to see new clinical trials showing Covid shots are still safe and effective before approving them for healthy adults and children, a costly new requirement for pharmaceutical companies that could limit who gets new jabs each year. Previously, the FDA typically approved updated Covid shots for all Americans each year based on simple tests that show they trigger a strong enough antibody response.

In addition to these new grants, EPA will provide $2,750,000 in supplemental funding to Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) recipients in Region 4.

EPA Announces $30 Million in Grant Funding to Strengthen Drinking Water and Wastewater Management in Rural America

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $30.7 million in grant funding to provide training and technical assistance that will improve water quality in small and rural communities across the country. This support helps ensure that every American has access to clean and safe water. Funding for the training and technical assistance grant will be used for meeting technical, financial, and managerial needs at small public drinking water and wastewater systems to achieve and maintain compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act.

NIH Researchers Develop Biomarker Score for Predicting Diets High in Ultra-Processed Foods

For the first time, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) identified patterns of metabolites in blood and urine that can be used as an objective measure of an individual’s consumption of energy from ultra-processed foods. Metabolites are left after the body converts food into energy, a process known as metabolism. Scientists used these data to develop a score based on multiple metabolites, known as a poly-metabolite score, that has the potential to reduce the reliance on, or complement the use of, self-reported dietary data in large population studies.

Infant with Rare, Incurable Disease is First to Successfully Receive Personalized Gene Therapy Treatment

A research team supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has developed and safely delivered a personalized gene editing therapy to treat an infant with a life-threatening, incurable genetic disease. The infant, who was diagnosed with the rare condition carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CPS1) deficiency shortly after birth, has responded positively to the treatment.
