New “Gas Station Heroin” Tianeptine Product Trend

 

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is continuing to see reports of adverse events following the use of tianeptine-containing products. Tianeptine is not approved by the FDA for any medical use and exposure may result in serious harm, including death. Side effects associated with tianeptine use include agitation, confusion, breathing difficulties, and death, among others.

Approximately 180 Students Under Quarantine Amid Measles Outbreak in North Dakota

 

Approximately 180 students in North Dakota are isolating at home after three schools were notified by public health officials of measles exposure on their campuses. Unvaccinated students at the schools were told they need to isolate for 21 days to ensure they were not infected. The precaution was to prevent students from unknowingly spreading the virus to others.

Mental Health in Emergencies

 

Every year, millions of people are affected by emergencies such as armed conflicts and natural disasters. These crises disrupt families, livelihoods and essential services, and significantly impact mental health. Nearly all those affected experience psychological distress. A minority go on to develop mental health conditions such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. Emergencies can worsen mental health conditions and social issues such as poverty and discrimination. They can also contribute to new problems, such as family separation and harmful substance use.

FDA Moves to Ban Fluoride Supplements for Kids, Removing a Key Tool for Dentists

 

Under the leadership of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is seeking to remove prescription fluoride supplements for kids from the market. These are fluoride tablets, drops or lozenges that are recommended for kids who don't get fluoridated water to help prevent cavities. The announcement from the FDA claims that ingested fluoride changes the human microbiome in a concerning way, even though the research it cites is inconclusive. 

FDA and NIH Announce Innovative Joint Nutrition Regulatory Science Program

 

On May 9, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a new, joint innovative research initiative that aims to make Americans' food and diets healthier. The effort will bring together experts in chronic disease, nutrition, toxicology, risk analysis, behavioral science, and chemistry with the goal of advancing nutrition and food science.

NatureMills US Inc. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Wheat, Milk, and Sesame in Select Products

 

NatureMills US Inc. is recalling select products that were sold between December 1, 2023, and May 10, 2025, due to undeclared allergens: Wheat, Milk, and Sesame. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to these allergens run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. The affected products were distributed nationwide in the United States via the NatureMills website.

Violent Actors and Cyber Criminals Threaten Emergency Services Sector

The Office of Intelligence and Analysis sent an assessment of threats to the Emergency Services Sector— police, firefighters, and other first responders— from violent extremists, other physical threat actors, or malicious cyber actors.
